Vietnam Urged to Prioritize Quality over Quantity in Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries

Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc has emphasized the need for Vietnam's agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors to shift from a sole focus on increasing export value to comprehensive restructuring towards modern, ecological, high-value-added, and sustainable development. This directive signifies a crucial pivot from the traditional volume-driven growth model to one prioritizing quality. In agricultural exports, this means moving beyond simply increasing quantities to enhancing product quality, building brands, and developing higher-value processed goods. This strategic shift is vital for strengthening competitiveness in the global market and ensuring the long-term sustainability of domestic agriculture. Under Vietnam's one-party system, such national strategic transitions can be implemented with relative speed under government guidance. However, successful execution will require extensive efforts in farmer training, infrastructure development, and market access. The transition to environmentally friendly and sustainable agriculture is particularly pressing in the context of climate change adaptation. While strengthening agricultural cooperation with China has been indicated, Vietnam also faces the crucial challenge of reducing its reliance on any single market and diversifying its export destinations. The launch of an online wholesale agricultural market connecting Vietnamese produce with Singapore serves as an example of this diversification and the exploration of new distribution channels leveraging digital technology. This shift towards quality-based growth is part of a broader economic restructuring in Vietnam and presents a significant opportunity to demonstrate the nation's transformation into a more sustainable and high-value-added economy, potentially attracting more international investment.
