PNP to Tighten Enforcement of Gun Ownership Laws

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered all police units nationwide to tighten the enforcement of firearm ownership laws. This measure is seen as an effort to prevent the proliferation of illegal firearms and their use in criminal activities. PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated, “I have directed all police units to intensify the enforcement of responsible firearm ownership laws, strengthen inspections of licensed firearm holders when authorized and sustain operations against loose and illegal firearms.” This directive reflects growing concerns over the illegal possession and diversion of firearms for criminal purposes. Firearm-related crimes remain a persistent security challenge in the Philippines, with incidents occurring sporadically in both rural and urban areas. While the PNP has previously implemented stricter firearm registration and conducted operations to seize illegal weapons, the latest order emphasizes a more rigorous enforcement approach. The initiative is based on the recognition that the illegal possession and misuse of firearms pose a threat to public safety. By strengthening inspections and eligibility checks for licensed firearm holders, the aim is to ensure the secure management of firearms.
