Vietnam Backs UN Reform for Efficiency and Effectiveness in Achieving SDGs
Vietnam has expressed support for UN reform aimed at enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in addressing global challenges. The nation emphasized the importance of technology transfer and bridging the digital divide for developing countries to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Vietnam has expressed its support for reforming the United Nations towards a more streamlined, effective, and adaptable organization in response to global challenges. This reform aims to better support countries in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. From July 13 to 15, a high-level segment of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) was held at the UN Headquarters in New York, USA. The forum's theme was "Promoting Transformative, Equitable, Innovative, and Coordinated Actions to Implement the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Towards a Sustainable Future for All." Minister Counselor Nguyen Hai Luu, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, attended and delivered a speech at the forum. In his address, Minister Counselor Nguyen Hai Luu emphasized that with only four years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda, the international community needs to take more decisive actions to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals. He called for enhanced technology transfer, bridging the digital divide, improving capacity, and ensuring sustainable financing for developing countries, including middle-income nations. Sharing Vietnam's experience, Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission Nguyen Hai Luu stated that Vietnam's transition to an upper-middle-income country is a significant milestone, a result of four decades of Doi Moi (Renovation) and a steadfast pursuit of inclusive development goals. However, like many other middle-income countries, Vietnam faces challenges from climate change and the need to enhance innovation capacity and competitiveness to avoid the middle-income trap. Minister Counselor Nguyen Hai Luu shared Vietnam's efforts in promoting digital transformation, green growth, renewable energy development, and enhancing climate change resilience. Simultaneously, Vietnam is accelerating investment in strategic infrastructure, developing human resources, and reforming institutions to boost productivity and ensure all citizens benefit from development outcomes. Affirming the role of multilateralism, Minister Counselor Nguyen Hai Luu stated that Vietnam supports UN reform towards a more streamlined, effective, and adaptable organization to better assist countries in effectively implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
