Region Chief Thanks Locals and Departments for Successful Flood Barrier Work

Ayeyarwady Region Chief Minister U Aye Kyaw told ONE NEWS that he is proud and grateful for the successful cooperation between local residents and relevant departments in blocking the water channels following the breach of the Ngwun River embankment in Laymyethna Township, Ayeyarwady Region. Due to heavy rainfall in the Ayeyarwady Region in late July and the rising water level of the Ngwun River, water flowed through a sand deposit at the base of the Ngwun River embankment in Laymyethna Township, Hinthada District, causing the embankment to become low and leading to overtopping. Emergency defense work and water channel blocking operations began on August 4. The work of driving steel sheet piles to create a barrier has been completed, and the water channel has been brought under control. "This control was achieved through the cooperation of everyone, and I am delighted and proud," said Ayeyarwady Region Chief Minister U Aye Kyaw to ONE NEWS. He added that to withstand the pressure from the external water due to the difference in water levels inside and outside the sealed steel sheet piles, work will continue, including placing sandbags, reinforcing with sandbags, injecting sand into the interior of the water using dredgers and water jetting, placing concrete sinkers to strengthen the sheet piles, and providing additional support with steel piles. It is understood that once the water recedes, restoration work will include agricultural necessities such as tractors, fuel, seeds, and fertilizers, which are being prepared in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation. Furthermore, to ensure that residents do not have to worry about food when they return to their homes, rice and essential goods will be provided, and kitchen utensils will be sold at affordable prices through mobile sales vehicles.
