Mindanao Quake Exposes Use of Non-Resistant Rebar, Steel Lobby Urges Stricter Standards

The recent magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao has raised questions about the seismic resistance of steel bars used in many collapsed and damaged buildings. The Philippine Iron and Steel Institute (PISI) is urging the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to strictly enforce a new national standard (PNS 49:2026) that prohibits the use of non-seismic-grade rebar.
