Laos and Vietnam Strengthen Party Ties, Promote Digital Economy Cooperation

The Central Party Theoretical Council of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the Central Theoretical Council of the Communist Party of Vietnam met on August 4 to review bilateral cooperation and exchange theoretical and practical experiences aimed at strengthening ties between the two parties. This meeting served as a crucial opportunity to further solidify the political and ideological bonds between the two nations. Meanwhile, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with support from the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Special Fund, hosted a three-day sub-regional seminar from July 29–31. The seminar was organized to strengthen digital economy cooperation and support future economic growth across Mekong-Lancang countries. A shared understanding was reached that digital advancement is essential for revitalizing regional economies and enhancing international competitiveness. Furthermore, the Department of Communications under the General Staff Department of the Ministry of National Defense and the State Enterprise Lao-Asia Telecom signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly study, design, and implement digital transformation initiatives for the ministry. This move is noteworthy as it promotes technological innovation and efficiency within the military sector. On July 28, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Republic of El Salvador officially established diplomatic relations following the signing of a Joint Communiqué at the United Nations headquarters in New York. This is seen as part of Laos's effort to expand its network of friendly relations within the international community. Additionally, Vice President Vienthong Siphandone received a farewell courtesy call from the Ambassador of the State of Israel to the Lao PDR on July 29 as he concluded his diplomatic mission in Laos. These developments indicate that Laos is focusing on promoting digitalization for economic growth while ensuring domestic political and military stability. Maintaining close ties with Vietnam is essential for the stability of the ruling party's regime in Laos, and promoting regional cooperation reflects an effort to seek new opportunities for economic development.
