Preah Sihanouk Province Releases 100,000 White Shrimp Fry to Boost Aquaculture

Preah Sihanouk Province, Cambodia – The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Preah Sihanouk Province is actively promoting marine and freshwater aquaculture to boost household incomes and reduce reliance on imports from neighboring provinces and countries. On Sunday morning, July 19, 2026, Mr. Nen Chamroeun, Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, confirmed the progress at the Marine Aquaculture Skill Dissemination Center located in Samrong Krom village, Samrong commune, Prey Nob district. This center spans 16 hectares and aims to enhance the livelihoods of coastal communities. The center's development and operation have received significant support, both morally and financially, from HE Mang Sineth, the Provincial Governor. The initiative is driven by three key objectives: 1. To enhance the economic efficiency of marine aquaculture. 2. To increase the income of coastal communities. 3. To facilitate the study, practice, and dissemination of new aquaculture techniques to residents in coastal areas, serving as a model for others. Mr. Chamroeun detailed that the center has successfully established four ponds and has now released 100,000 white shrimp fry into the fifth pond after its cleaning. Previous ponds are dedicated to cultivating different species: pond one houses Spong trout, pond two hosts stone crabs and white shrimp, and ponds three and four are also used for raising stone crabs and white shrimp. The fifth pond is specifically for white shrimp. Future plans include the preparation of ponds six and seven. These ponds will vary in size, from one hectare to ten acres, with the seventh pond being the largest at six hectares. Furthermore, Mr. Chamroeun extended an offer to any citizens interested in fish, crab, or white shrimp farming, stating that the agricultural department's team is ready to provide free training and guidance. It is noteworthy that the implementation of the Marine Aquaculture Skill Dissemination Center in Prey Nob district is also supported by HE Say Sam Al, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, who also chairs the government working group for Preah Sihanouk Province.
