8 Hurt in 7-Vehicle Collision on Manila's España Boulevard

Eight people were injured after seven vehicles were involved in a massive collision along España Boulevard in Manila on Friday night. According to the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (DRRMD), the vehicles involved were two buses, two sport utility vehicles (SUV), two jeepneys, and a motorcycle. Lt. Abelardo Aguilar of the Manila Police District explained that the accident occurred when the brakes of a passenger bus malfunctioned while traversing the boulevard. "It hit an SUV, which in turn hit a minibus and the jeeps," Aguilar stated. Investigators also found a motorcycle wedged between the two jeeps. Of the injured, the most serious case involved a possible leg fracture. Seven individuals were brought to different hospitals, while one refused hospitalization. The affected section of the road was temporarily closed to allow emergency responders to attend to the scene. Students and volunteers from nearby universities also assisted, providing first aid to the victims. Police indicated that the bus driver might be held liable for reckless imprudence resulting in physical injuries. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in Manila's traffic infrastructure and the critical need for vehicle safety management. The aging condition and potential lack of maintenance in public transport like buses and jeepneys are constant concerns that affect the safety of many citizens daily.
