Vietnamese-made offshore wind substation exported to Europe for the first time
Vietnam's PTSC M&C has successfully manufactured and exported four offshore wind substation units for the Baltica 2 project in Poland, marking a significant milestone for the country's offshore wind industry and its entry into the European market.
PTSC M&C, a subsidiary of Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam), has announced the successful manufacturing and export of four offshore substation (OSS) units for the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm project in Poland. This marks the first time offshore wind products manufactured in Vietnam are exported to Europe, signifying a crucial milestone for Vietnam's offshore wind industry and its growing role in the global energy transition supply chain. The Baltica 2 project, jointly developed by Denmark's Ørsted and Poland's PGE, is set to be a significant offshore wind farm with a total capacity of approximately 1.5 GW. It will comprise 107 wind turbines and four offshore substations, each with a capacity of 375 MW. These substations are designed to collect electricity from the turbines and transmit it to shore. The project is expected to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2027, aiming to supply electricity to around 2.4 million Polish households and contribute to Poland's renewable energy goals and energy transition. In June 2023, a consortium of Semco Maritime, PTSC M&C, Ørsted, and PGE was awarded the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contract for the four offshore substations and their corresponding jacket foundations for the Baltica 2 project. PTSC M&C was responsible for the design, procurement, onshore fabrication, and commissioning of these units. The structures, totaling approximately 16,000 tons, were manufactured at PTSC M&C's fabrication yard in Vietnam, adhering to stringent quality and safety standards and completed on schedule. A notable achievement was the specialized coating technology applied to ensure the structures, fabricated in Vietnam's tropical monsoon climate, could withstand the harsh, corrosive, and icy conditions of the Baltic Sea for decades. Despite the challenge of concurrently executing seven other large-scale projects, PTSC M&C demonstrated its capability in production organization, resource allocation, and quality control to international standards. Mr. Tô Ngọc Tú, Director of PTSC M&C, stated, "For us, this is a journey to bring the experience, capabilities, and aspirations of PTSC M&C to one of the most demanding markets in the world," expressing confidence in enhanced international client trust and competitiveness. This success highlights Vietnam's capability to leverage its accumulated technical expertise and infrastructure from the oil and gas sector for the renewable energy supply chain. PTSC M&C and its parent company, Petrovietnam, aim to use this experience to participate in larger projects and expand their presence in the international energy services market.
