Chinese Envoy Affirms 'Ironclad Friendship' with Cambodia, Reiterates Development Partnership Commitment

PHNOM PENH, Aug 4, 2026 (KPT) — China’s Ambassador to Cambodia has reaffirmed the strength of bilateral ties, describing the two nations as “ironclad friends” who support each other through challenges and remain committed to shared development. Speaking during a visit to Preah Vihear province on August 3, Ambassador Wang Wenbin said Beijing would continue standing with Cambodia and supporting its development priorities. “China and Cambodia are ironclad friends who have stood together through thick and thin,” Wang said, adding that China firmly backed Cambodia’s pursuit of a development path suited to its own conditions. He expressed confidence that Cambodia would maintain peace, stability and growth, noting the country’s progress over nearly three decades. Wang said cooperation would expand in areas including trade, investment, infrastructure and technology to promote long‑term development. The remarks underline the depth of Cambodia‑China relations, which have grown through frequent high‑level exchanges and close government cooperation. Chea Thyrith, spokesperson for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, said ties remained strong at both government and party levels, with collaboration continuing across multiple fields. Geopolitical analyst Gnel Rattha said China’s engagement demonstrated its role as one of Cambodia’s key strategic partners, particularly as regional competition intensifies. Expanded cooperation, he noted, could help Cambodia attract investment, strengthen industrial development and enhance participation in regional supply chains. The latest remarks follow a July 16 meeting in Shanghai between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
