Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo Urges Citizens to Remain Calm Following Kumamoto Earthquake
Following a M7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28, 2026, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has urged Indonesian citizens in Japan to remain calm and follow local authorities' instructions. No Indonesian casualties have been reported so far.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 16:35 local time. Following this event, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Tokyo has strongly urged Indonesian citizens in Japan to remain calm, increase vigilance, and follow the instructions of local authorities. Based on coordination with Indonesian citizen (WNI) nodes in the affected areas, the embassy has reported that there is no information yet regarding any casualties among Indonesian citizens. Muhammad Al Aula, Coordinator for Information and Social Culture Functions at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, stated in a release, "All Indonesian citizens in the Kumamoto Prefecture area are urged to remain calm and vigilant. Prioritize the safety of yourself and your family and continue to monitor official information on the situation's development through the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Japanese Government." He further advised, "Follow the directions and instructions from local authorities regarding evacuation measures and other safety protocols. Try to keep your mobile phone active and conserve battery usage so that you can be contacted for emergency coordination purposes." The embassy is continuously monitoring the condition of affected Indonesian citizens, working and communicating with the Indonesian community in Kumamoto and its surroundings. Coordination with local authorities in Kumamoto Prefecture is also ongoing. The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka are continuing to monitor the situation's development and coordinate with Japanese authorities, as well as Indonesian communities in the affected regions.
