Suspect Claiming to be 'Son of Police' Sent to Phnom Penh Court for Assault

In Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, a suspect claiming to be the "son of police" has been arrested and sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for allegedly assaulting two victims. The incident occurred on the morning of July 31, 2026, and was carried out by the Phnom Penh Capital Command of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces. The incident stemmed from video footage circulating on social media, showing the suspect assaulting two individuals. According to the victims, they had no prior acquaintance with the suspect and no existing disputes. On the day of the incident, the victim was riding a motorcycle with seven friends when a group on two motorcycles approached, shouting "thief" and demanding they stop. As the victim prepared to stop, the group began ramming their motorcycles. Fearing for their safety, the victim attempted to flee. However, the two motorcycles pursued, sounding sirens, with journalists' motorcycles following and filming from behind. Upon stopping their motorcycle near the Ministry of Interior, the suspect and his associates immediately attacked, kicking and beating the victim, causing them to lose consciousness and collapse. The condition of the friends riding with the victim remains unclear. After returning home, the victim saw online news reporting on their assault, realizing the perpetrators were not law enforcement officers. The victim's parents admitted them to the Cambodia-China Friendship Hospital (Preah Kossamak Hospital) for treatment. While the suspect's confession reportedly contains inconsistencies with the victim's complaint, the widely shared video of the assault serves as irrefutable evidence of the suspect's criminal actions.
