Thai Deputy PM to Convene Special Meeting on Southern Unrest, Addresses Taiwan's "One China" Statement Concerns

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeaw has indicated his intention to convene a meeting with the government's special envoy this week to resolve security issues in the southern border provinces. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation with Malaysia, stating that peace and stability in the southern border region are important for both countries. Regarding violent acts by the BRN (Barisan Revolusi Nasional), Deputy Prime Minister Sihasak condemned them, stating, "We cannot accept their use of violence," and reiterated the stance that the cessation of violence is essential for dialogue. He noted the need for a thorough investigation into the background and causes of the incidents, also touching upon the possibility of political motivations being involved. In response to Taiwan's expression of disappointment with Thailand's "One China" policy statement, Deputy Prime Minister Sihasak emphasized that the wording in the statement has been used by past administrations and carries no new meaning or restrictions whatsoever. He pointed to the addition of the phrase "by peaceful means" to the statement, asserting that Thailand has not deviated from past agreements and has not suffered any disadvantages.
