Cambodia Hosts International Conference on Water Management for Future Resilience

The 4th International Conference of the International Water Association (IWA) on "Rainwater for Tomorrow: Water, Climate, and Culture" commenced in Phnom Penh on September 2, 2026. Presided over by H.E. Thor Cheath, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology, the conference focused on rainwater harvesting and management. H.E. Thor Cheath highlighted the increasing uncertainties and risks brought about by climate change, including floods, droughts, and altered rainfall patterns. He emphasized the critical importance of rainwater as a valuable natural resource that must be harvested, conserved, protected, and managed sustainably for the future, supporting agriculture, food security, and resilient communities. The Minister stated that the 7th mandate government, under the wise leadership of Prime Minister H.E. Hun Manet, considers water as a "golden iron" and a significant driver of national development. Water has been designated as one of the five priority sectors within the Pentagonal Strategy, supporting Cambodia's development towards its 2030 and 2050 visions. Furthermore, H.E. Thor Cheath expressed support for initiatives like "Rainwater Schools" and "Khmer Rain Day." These programs are expected to foster a stronger water management culture among youth and society, contributing to the development of integrated, intelligent, and climate-resilient water management systems. The goal is to transform seasonal rainwater challenges into strategic resources for water security, food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Minister Thor Cheath expressed strong confidence that the international conference will lead to concrete actions, stronger partnerships, and practical solutions not only for Cambodia and the Mekong region but also for other areas. He anticipates it will serve as a crucial opportunity to strengthen shared visions and international cooperation on rainwater management, water security, and climate resilience.
