PM Hun Manet Urges Graduates: 'Don't Wait for Authority to Prove Your Worth'

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet urged graduates not to wait for authority or high positions before demonstrating their capabilities, emphasizing that such an approach is a significant mistake. Speaking at the South-East Asia University graduation ceremony on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of achieving success in one's current role and avoiding rigid adherence to one's position. Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the value of flexibility, creativity, and problem-solving skills in the workplace. He advised graduates to apply their academic knowledge, and when encountering obstacles, to seek further learning and solutions to showcase their accomplishments. He recounted an anecdote about a military officer who studied abroad. Upon returning, the officer was assigned to tasks such as copying documents. However, the officer refused, citing that it was not his specialized field. Prime Minister Hun Manet pointed out that possessing a degree does not automatically grant authority or immediate recognition. He stated that to earn trust from superiors, one must first diligently perform assigned duties and demonstrate competence. "Even with a degree, you may not immediately receive opportunities. If your superiors are not yet aware of your capabilities, gaining their trust will be difficult," the Prime Minister added. He further emphasized that generating numerous results is crucial for earning trust and that diligently showcasing one's abilities and working hard from the early stages of a career is vital. Waiting until one holds a significant position to prove oneself represents a loss of valuable time and opportunities. He encouraged young people to utilize every available chance to develop themselves and produce positive outcomes, regardless of their current role. Prime Minister Hun Manet concluded by stating that building achievements and experience from the outset forms a robust foundation for future growth and advancement to more significant positions.
