Thailand Approves 1 Million Baht Compensation for School Shooting Victims

The Thai government has decided to provide compensation to victims of the school shooting incident in Nonthaburi province. This decision was made during a meeting of the committee for the Prime Minister's Office's Disaster Victim Assistance Fund. The committee reviewed compensation amounts based on four previous shooting incidents: the attack at Terminal 21 shopping mall in Nakhon Ratchasima, the incident at a child development center in Nong Bua Lamphu, the shooting by a youth at Siam Paragon in Bangkok, and the shooting at Phathong Krachang Khiriwat School in Hat Yai, Songkhla. These incidents were deemed similar in nature to the recent school shooting. As a result, the following compensation will be provided to victims: - Deceased: 1 million baht - Permanently disabled: 700,000 baht - Seriously injured: 200,000 baht - Minor injuries: 100,000 baht Additionally, funeral expenses of 50,000 baht will be covered, surviving families will receive 30,000 baht for livelihood, and families with children under 25 will receive an additional 50,000 baht. Mr. Phadorn Prasarnnuntakul, who chaired the meeting, stated that the incident, occurring in a place of normal daily life like a school, falls under the scope of the fund, which is supported by public donations. He also reiterated the strict enforcement against illegal possession and carrying of firearms in public, and indicated intentions to propose amendments to firearms-related laws. Disbursement of compensation is expected to be expedited within a few days after the number of affected individuals is finalized.
