Asalha Puja Festival Reinforces Religious Significance for Buddhists

The Asalha Puja festival was grandly celebrated at Damnak Pagoda in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The festival commemorates five significant events in the life of the Buddha, providing an opportunity for Buddhists to deeply understand their religious significance. These five events include the day the celestial being Santusita descended to conceive in his mother's womb, the day Prince Siddhartha decided to renounce worldly life, the day the Buddha delivered his first sermon two months and two days after his enlightenment, the day the Sangha (monks), one of the 'Three Jewels' of Buddhism, appeared in the world, and the day the Buddha performed miracles to subdue heretics. These events are considered opportunities for Buddhists to accumulate merit and purify their minds, helping them to lead better lives. The festival featured various religious ceremonies and activities, including alms rounds for 170 monks, a procession through Siem Reap city for Asalha Puja, sermons on Buddhist teachings, and the offering of 2570 lamps. These activities were intended to show gratitude to the Buddha and for participants to accumulate their own merit. Phra Kru Thammawisoth Rangsey Lach Chanth, the chief abbot of Damnak Pagoda, stated, "This festival is very important for the faithful. They must study and understand the meaning of each special day. These occasions serve to awaken our minds to fulfill good deeds for our lives and to be a factor for attaining Nirvana, escaping all suffering." Source: AKP Khmer
