Vietnam Deepens International Cooperation as ASEAN Membership Nears 30 Years
As Vietnam approaches its 30th anniversary of ASEAN membership, it is intensifying its efforts to strengthen international ties. The nation is fostering global cooperation alongside economic growth, promoting collaboration across various sectors including culture, technology, and security, thereby enhancing its international standing.
Vietnam is intensifying its efforts to strengthen international ties as it approaches its 30th anniversary of ASEAN membership next year. As part of this initiative, Vietnam is deepening cooperation with partner countries across a diverse range of sectors. The country aims to further develop its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with South Korea, particularly in politics, economy, trade, investment, science and technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Furthermore, through parliamentary exchanges, Vietnam is working to deepen bilateral relations with Cambodia, demonstrating its commitment to enhancing its role as a proactive and responsible member of ASEAN in promoting regional peace, stability, and prosperity. Economically, Vietnam has established itself as an open economy, with Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) playing a crucial role in its development, accumulating registered capital close to $550 billion. Ho Chi Minh City is strengthening its role as a gateway to the global maritime economy by leveraging the Cai Mep Ha Free Trade Zone (FTZ) as a new growth driver. Additionally, Vietnam is exploring potential cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and the semiconductor industry with Indonesia, aiming to capitalize on their complementary strengths. Culturally, Vietnam is pursuing recognition as a UNESCO Creative City, with plans to establish the country's first City of Photography as early as 2027. This initiative could follow the success of Hanoi (Design), Hoi An (Crafts and Folk Art), Da Lat (Music), and Ho Chi Minh City (Film) in joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Domestically, Ho Chi Minh City has expanded its development potential through administrative integration, reinforcing its role as an economic engine. In Lam Dong province, the production of aluminum ingot products has commenced, contributing to the nation's industrial self-reliance.
