A thin crescent moon was observed very close to a bright, star-like planet, Venus, captivating many citizens who shared the phenomenon on social media. The bright point was not a star but the planet Venus. The phenomenon where the moon and Venus appear close together from Earth is known as a lunar-Venus conjunction. The moon, being only about three days old, had a small illuminated surface, while Venus is one of the brightest objects in the night sky after the moon. This combination made them resemble the symbolic crescent moon and star. A conjunction occurs when two or more celestial bodies appear very close when viewed from Earth, despite their vast actual distances. While the moon orbits Earth and Venus orbits the Sun, their orbital paths, as seen from Earth, lie around the ecliptic plane, allowing the moon to appear near Venus at certain times. On September 14, 2026, the moon was in a young crescent phase with an illumination of about 10-16%, while Venus was exceptionally bright with a magnitude of approximately -4.5 to -4.8. Both were visible in the western sky after sunset. Venus currently serves as the 'evening star,' or Bintang Kejora, visible brightly in the twilight sky before setting. The spectacle was further enhanced by the phenomenon of Venus occultation in some parts of Indonesia. This occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and Venus, causing Venus to temporarily disappear from view as it is hidden by the moon. This event resembles an eclipse, but with Venus being the object obscured. NASA explains that a lunar occultation occurs when the moon moves directly in front of another celestial object from Earth's viewpoint, causing that object to be temporarily hidden. Interestingly, this phenomenon was not uniformly visible across Indonesia. Bosscha stated that a full occultation was only observable from specific regions, including parts of Sumatra, western Java, and a small part of West Kalimantan. Outside these paths, observers only witnessed a conjunction, where the moon and Venus appeared close without Venus being hidden. This difference arises because the observer's perspective of the moon changes based on their location on Earth. Since the moon is relatively close to Earth compared to Venus, positional changes of the observer can make the moon appear to shift slightly against the background sky. Bosscha noted that the event lasted from approximately 19:30 to 20:43 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), with exact timings varying by location. The view was in the western sky after sunset and could be observed with the naked eye. NASA revealed that the September 14 event was the second of three Venus occultations scheduled for 2026. The first occurred on June 17, visible from parts of the United States and Canada. Following the September event, the next one is scheduled for November 7 and will be observable from parts of South America.
