Vietnam Warns of Heavy Rain Triggering Flash Floods, Landslides

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting in Vietnam has reported that between 2 PM and 4 PM on August 2nd, heavy rainfall was observed in wide areas of Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An provinces. Specifically, precipitation levels recorded were 39.6mm in Muong Ken (Phu Tho), 72.6mm in Xuan Loc (Thanh Hoa), and 58.4mm in Chau Son (Nghe An). This intense rainfall has sharply increased the risk of flash floods and landslides, particularly in mountainous regions of the northern and central areas. The center has issued warnings for flash floods and landslides in several localities, including Son La, Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, and Lam Dong provinces. In Vietnam, natural disasters caused by extreme weather events have been on the rise in recent years, partly due to the impacts of climate change. The risk of damage from flash floods and landslides is particularly severe in the northern mountainous regions with their steep terrain and in low-lying areas along rivers. The government is striving to mitigate damage through measures such as developing rapid evacuation plans during disasters, strengthening infrastructure, and providing information to residents. However, responding to widespread disasters remains a constant challenge. These warnings underscore the importance of ensuring public safety and establishing prompt response systems in the event of disasters. Authorities plan to closely monitor the latest weather information and consider raising alert levels or issuing evacuation orders as necessary.
