Former Bac Lieu Provincial Chairman Expelled from Communist Party

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam has decided to expel Duong Thanh Trung, former Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee, from the Party. The decision cited his degradation in political ideology, morality, and lifestyle, as well as numerous violations that caused very serious consequences. During its meeting on July 28, the Central Committee determined that Mr. Trung violated Party regulations and state laws, as well as committed acts that Party members are prohibited from doing and failed to uphold exemplary responsibilities. He was also concluded to have degenerated in political ideology, morality, and lifestyle. According to the Central Committee, Mr. Trung's violations caused very serious consequences, provoking public outcry and severely damaging the prestige of Party organizations, local authorities, and the agencies where he worked. Based on the content, nature, extent, and consequences of the violations, the Central Committee decided to expel Mr. Duong Thanh Trung from the Party and requested relevant authorities to promptly and synchronously implement administrative disciplinary measures in conjunction with Party disciplinary action. Twenty days prior to this decision, the Ca Mau Provincial Police initiated criminal proceedings against Mr. Trung to investigate violations of regulations on compensation, support, and resettlement when the State acquires land. The alleged misconduct under investigation occurred during his tenure as Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee. The investigative agency has not yet disclosed the details of the case. Mr. Duong Thanh Trung, 65, hails from Phuoc Long district and holds a Master's degree in Law and a senior political theory qualification. He previously served in positions such as Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Organization Department, Secretary of the Bac Lieu City Party Committee, and Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee. In December 2015, he was elected Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee, a position he held until November 2020.
