Russia-North Korea Ties: An Indonesian Reporter's Perspective

The Diplomat Indonesia has conducted a detailed analysis of the rapidly deepening strategic partnership between Russia and North Korea from an Indonesian geopolitical perspective. Since the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty in 2024, the two countries have held three strategic dialogues, with the most recent meeting taking place in Moscow in late July. The extent to which this dramatic shift in relations is "transactional" and how sensitive it is to the developments in the Ukraine war will be key going forward. As a central player in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Indonesia holds a deep interest in the stability of the region and the shifting balance of power. Of particular note is the trajectory of China, which also has a complex relationship with Indonesia. The growing closeness between Russia and North Korea could create a new power dynamic in the region, potentially influencing the foreign policy of ASEAN nations, and by extension, Indonesia.
