Garuda Indonesia Plane Suffers Tire Burst During Takeoff from Jakarta, Makes Safe Landing

A Garuda Indonesia flight, GA604, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with registration PK-GFS, en route from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) in Makassar, experienced a tire burst shortly after takeoff on Thursday (3/9). The Directorate General of Air Transportation (Ditjen Hubud) of the Ministry of Transportation confirmed the incident. According to the report received by the Director General of Air Transportation, Lukman F. Laisa, the incident began at 05:52 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB) when the Jakarta Air Traffic Service Center (JATSC) tower informed the Pilot in Command (PIC) that a tire on the main wheel number 3 had burst after airborne. At 06:04 AM WIB, the PIC coordinated via Ground to Air (GTA) communication and decided to continue the flight to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. Coordination was then made with Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport to anticipate potential runway blockage during and after the aircraft's landing, as well as to prepare handling procedures. The aircraft, GA604, landed safely on runway 03 at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport at 09:13 AM Central Indonesian Time (WITA). Following the landing, the runway was temporarily closed via NOTAM Number A3284/26 to ensure operational safety and to handle the aircraft. Subsequently, the Directorate General of Air Transportation, through the Airport Authority Office Region V Makassar, coordinated with the Technical Team of Garuda Indonesia and GMF AeroAsia. Based on the initial inspection, a burst tire was found on main wheel number 3. The aircraft was then towed from the runway to the parking stand for further examination and repair, including the replacement of the main wheel. A total of 141 passengers and 8 crew members were handled, with safety and security prioritized in accordance with applicable regulations. "The Directorate General of Air Transportation appreciates the quick response and intensive coordination carried out by all relevant parties, including the flight crew, airport management, AirNav Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, and the technical team, so that the aircraft could land safely and post-incident handling could be carried out according to procedures," said Lukman in his official statement on Thursday (3/9/2026). Furthermore, Lukman stated that as part of the handling process, an inspection and cleaning of the runways at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport have been conducted to ensure there is no Foreign Object Debris (FOD) that could potentially disrupt flight safety. "The Directorate General of Air Transportation ensures that flight safety and security are the top priorities and will continue to coordinate and monitor the process of inspection and handling of the aircraft in accordance with applicable regulations," he concluded.
