Young Filmmakers Connect with National Heritage and Wisdom

A short film competition titled "Today's Virtuosos" has been held in Vietnam, showcasing young filmmakers' fresh perspectives on the nation's traditional wisdom and cultural heritage. Organized jointly by the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Cinema Development and the Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities of the Temple of Literature and National University, Hanoi, the event awarded 13 works. Lê Hoàng Hà received the top prize for his documentary "The Thirst to Reach Far." The competition attracted a diverse range of participants, from non-professionals and students to professional filmmakers, with many young talents bringing unique experiences and viewpoints. Out of 23 short films selected for the final round, 17 were documentaries, 4 were fiction, and 2 were animated. The high proportion of documentaries indicated that many authors chose to base their works on real characters and events. The submitted films covered a broad spectrum of themes, including education, the image of teachers, intellectuals, history, science, creativity, culture, heritage, traditional arts, professions, and contemporary social issues. Works focusing on education, wisdom, and the role of teachers were particularly prominent, exploring the transmission of knowledge and intergenerational continuity. Films highlighting the contributions of historical figures and contemporary intellectuals also garnered attention. In the realm of traditional culture and heritage, participants explored themes such as the revitalization of traditional arts by young people and fresh interpretations of cultural values. Works focusing on the lives of ethnic minorities and highland communities were also featured, reflecting diverse societal aspects. Several films addressed contemporary life, touching upon individual choices, responsibilities, and career development, portraying the realistic concerns and aspirations of the youth. Animated films offered unique narrative approaches, enriching the competition's diversity. Jury president Nguyễn Khải Hưng praised the works for demonstrating respect for tradition, the teacher-student relationship, and innovative cinematic language. However, he also noted that some films, due to varying levels of experience and production conditions, require further improvement in areas such as narrative structure, visuals, sound, editing, and emotional engagement.
