Thai PM Emphasizes "Family-Like" Bond in Sino-Thai Relations

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that the relationship between Thailand and China is akin to being "closer than distant relatives" during a 60th-anniversary celebration hosted by nine Chinese associations based in Thailand. China's Chargé d'affaires ad interim, Wu Zhiwu, echoed this sentiment, stating both nations are "one family" and wishing the Prime Minister success in his missions for the country and its people. The event, held at the Teochew Association in Bangkok's Sathorn district, was attended by representatives from nine prominent Chinese associations, including Teochew, Hakka, Kwangtung, Hainan, Hokkien, Chiangchu, Taiwanese, Yunnan, and Guangxi. Prime Minister Anutin highlighted that for over six decades, these associations have served not only as gathering places for the Thai-Chinese community but also as facilitators of business, social contributions, and a bridge connecting the people of Thailand and China. He paid tribute to the significant role of Thai-Chinese individuals in the development of Thai society and economy over generations, noting that while they are fully Thai citizens, they maintain a valuable connection to their linguistic and cultural heritage, which is a distinct strength for Thailand. Recounting his official visit to China in July, the Prime Minister shared his clear impression that China places great importance on Thailand as a partner for mutual progress. He recalled President Xi Jinping describing the Thai-Chinese relationship as "one family" and referring to China as a "reliable strategic partner" and a "close friend, closer than distant relatives." This visit led to the signing of 15 Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), including the establishment of a new Board of Investment (BOI) office in Chengdu to foster economic cooperation with Western China, particularly in future industries such as semiconductors, advanced electronics, AI, robotics, new energy vehicles, and clean energy. Prime Minister Anutin stated that this cooperation opens a two-way street: attracting innovative and technological Chinese companies to invest in Thailand to upgrade its industries, and providing opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs to do business and find partners in the Chinese market. He expressed Thailand's aspiration to grow together as partners, rather than merely being a market or production base. He also urged the nine Chinese associations to further strengthen their role as a bridge for the next 60 years, extending connections to younger generations, new technologies, and emerging opportunities. This, he hoped, would encourage Thai youth to view China as a land of global opportunity and inspire young Chinese to see Thailand as a country for joint innovation and investment. Chargé d'affaires Wu Zhiwu reiterated President Xi's "one family" statement, underscoring the importance of unity and shared prosperity between the two nations. He asserted that in a rapidly changing global landscape, China and Thailand should hold hands even tighter to build stability. China stands ready to cooperate with Thailand based on mutual respect, sincerity, and shared benefits to enhance cooperation in all aspects and promote the well-being of both peoples. Wu Zhiwu concluded by wishing Prime Minister Anutin good health, happiness, and success in his missions for the nation and its people. It was reported that Prime Minister Anutin is of Cantonese descent, with the Chinese name "Chen Xiyu," and also serves as a director of the Kwangtung Association.
