Cambodia and UK to Strengthen Cooperation Against Cybercrime

The UK Home Secretary, Lord Hanson, is scheduled to visit Cambodia to discuss strengthening cooperation against online scams, impersonation, and transnational crimes, as announced by the British Embassy on September 22, 2026. During his first visit to Cambodia, Lord Hanson will participate in an international conference on combating cybercrime hosted by Cambodia and sign a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the UK and Cambodia. This MOU aims to enhance cooperation in confronting these growing global threats. The British Embassy emphasized, "Criminal networks have no borders, so our efforts to combat them must also be borderless." During his visit, the minister is also scheduled to meet with United Nations agencies and members of the press to gain further insight into the evolution of this issue in Cambodia. The embassy further stated that Cambodia's efforts are indeed significant. By bringing together international partners and strengthening cooperation, Cambodia is contributing to resolving one of the fastest-growing criminal problems in the world. Cambodia has seen increasing digitalization alongside economic development in recent years, which has also led to a rise in cybercrime risks. In particular, the methods of fraud and extortion involving international criminal organizations have become more sophisticated, making international cooperation essential not only for domestic security but also for global efforts. This strengthened cooperation with the UK is expected to be a crucial step in enhancing Cambodia's capacity to address these challenges.
