Phnom Tamao Zoo's Elephant 'Sakor' Dies at 34 from Illness

TAKEU PROVINCE – It is with deep sorrow that the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center announces the passing of Sakor, a 34-year-old male elephant. Sakor died on the night of September 22, 2026, at approximately 7:40 PM, after falling ill with severe abdominal swelling. Our specialized veterinary team exerted their utmost efforts in rescuing and treating Sakor with the greatest care. Unfortunately, his life could not be saved. The veterinary team is currently conducting an autopsy and further examinations to determine the detailed cause of death. Sakor was born and raised in Koh Kong Province, initially found in Botum Sakor District. Due to several challenges, and to ensure the safety of the public and travelers, Sakor was rescued and transferred to the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center in 2012. He has since been a cherished and vital member of the center's elephant herd. The leadership and the entire team are profoundly saddened by this loss. We extend our deepest gratitude to the veterinary team, animal keepers, and all relevant parties who strived to care for and protect Sakor's well-being until his final moments.
