Svay Rieng Court Detains Driver in $9,000 Extortion Case

In Cambodia's southeastern Svay Rieng Province, Sok Thon, a 47-year-old driver, has been detained on suspicion of involvement in extorting $9,000 from a merchant transporting cloth. He faces charges of conspiracy and a potential prison sentence of 2 to 5 years. On September 5, a judge at the Svay Rieng Provincial Court issued an order for the detention of Sok Thon. He was transferred to the Svay Rieng Provincial Prosecutor's Office on the morning of September 4 by officials from the Criminal Department of the Ministry of Interior for legal proceedings. According to the court's order, Sok Thon is accused of conspiracy in the act of extortion, as stipulated by Articles 29, 363, and 364 of the Penal Code. He faces potential imprisonment ranging from 2 to 5 years. This case highlights the intensified law enforcement in Cambodia and the government's reinforced crackdown on illicit activities within economic operations.
