Samaral, the 'Danggit' Fish, Eyed for Aquaculture Potential by Philippines

The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) is investigating the aquaculture potential of samaral, a local fish that is processed into the crunchy, sun-dried treat known as 'danggit', in an effort to boost the country's aquaculture sector and improve the livelihoods of fishing communities. "By giving fisherfolk direct access to technology and strong market support, we can boost the production of samaral nationwide," stated DA-BFAR National Director Elizer Salilig. Samaral is recognized for its white meat and distinct flavor, making it a versatile ingredient in various Filipino dishes. The agency noted that samaral can be developed into a range of products, including dried, smoked, marinated, deboned, and ready-to-cook options. It is also practical for aquaculture operators, as it adapts well to brackishwater ponds and integrates seamlessly into existing farming infrastructure. "As we aim to improve the wellbeing of our fisherfolk, we see samaral as a strong opportunity to boost their livelihoods. Developing this species goes beyond simply producing more fish. We want to strengthen the entire value chain so its growth creates sustainable income for our fisherfolk and fish farmers," Salilig emphasized. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority indicates that samaral aquaculture production is projected to increase from 153.89 metric tons in 2021 to 361.57 metric tons by 2025.
