Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Sar Sokha, has ordered specialized police forces to immediately investigate allegations that some police officers demanded $500 USD from a foreign national. Dr. Sok Sokha, spokesperson for the Phnom Penh Municipal Police Commissioner, stated that this investigation order was issued following the posting and sharing of information on social media, which accused a foreigner named Mao Setong of being extorted $500 by police officers while traveling from Kampot province into Phnom Penh city. Sources also indicated that the social media posts included images of a payment receipt, a motorcycle, and two foreign nationals. Currently, specialized police officials are investigating and verifying the information to ascertain the truth surrounding this case. Authorities have emphasized that if the accusations are found to be true, the involved police officers will face disciplinary measures from the National Police and may also be held legally accountable under current criminal law.
