Jakarta Warns of Land Subsidence Risk in 9 Districts Amid Heavy Rainfall

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD DKI Jakarta) has issued a warning regarding the increased risk of land subsidence in nine districts located in South and East Jakarta, anticipating heavy rainfall until the end of September 2026. This alert is based on monitoring data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). BPBD DKI Jakarta stated in its official announcement, "The forecast areas for potential land movement are compiled based on the overlay of the land movement vulnerability map and the monthly rainfall forecast map obtained from BMKG." The affected areas include seven districts in South Jakarta: Cilandak, Jagakarsa, Kebayoran Baru, Kebayoran Lama, Mampang Prapatan, Pasar Minggu, and Pesanggrahan. Two districts in East Jakarta, Kramatjati and Pasar Rebo, are also included. These districts are categorized within a "medium zone of land movement potential." However, BPBD explained that the risk can increase drastically if rainfall exceeds normal levels. "In the medium zone, areas have a moderate potential for land movement. Land movement may occur in this zone if rainfall is above normal, especially in areas bordering river valleys, escarpments, road cuts, or if slopes are disturbed," the agency clarified. In response to this potential disaster, BPBD DKI Jakarta urges all regional government officials and local residents to enhance their preparedness for extreme weather conditions. "Therefore, village heads, sub-district heads, and residents are advised to remain vigilant for the potential of land movement during periods of above-normal rainfall," BPBD DKI Jakarta emphasized.
