Vinh Long Residents' Lives Disrupted by Wind Power Project Noise

In the Thạnh Thới B hamlet of Thạnh Hải commune, Vĩnh Long province, southern Vietnam, 155 households have been suffering from disrupted lives for years due to noise pollution originating from the Thanh Phong wind power project. Land within the safety corridors of the wind turbine towers also impacts residents' production and daily life, yet these issues have not been adequately resolved or compensated. The wind power plant in question was constructed with a capacity of 30MW by Sunpro, a company involved in solar power projects. Vietnam has been actively developing renewable energy, particularly offshore wind power, with the government promoting its expansion from the perspectives of economic growth and energy security. However, cases like this, where large-scale infrastructure development directly affects the living environment of local residents, suggest structural challenges within Vietnam's one-party system that can make it difficult for community voices to be heard. It is possible that environmental impact assessments and consideration for residents were insufficient, prioritizing economic growth. Residents face not only sleep disturbances and stress from the noise but also economic losses due to land use restrictions within the safety zones. Early resolution of these issues is crucial for residents to regain peace in their lives.
