Cambodia Accelerates Textbook Modernization to Enhance Global Competitiveness
Cambodia is pushing forward with textbook modernization to improve educational quality. The government aims to foster student competitiveness in the global market by updating content and teaching methods to international standards and strengthening the international company selection process.
On the morning of June 29, 2026, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of Cambodia, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister H.E. Dr. Chan Narun, convened a meeting on the modernization of core textbooks and the technical specifications for selecting international companies to develop them. The meeting thoroughly reviewed the evaluation reports of international companies and the progress of core textbook modernization. Key points highlighted included: Enhancing the quality of core textbooks to update and modernize their content, teaching methods, and design in line with international standards and the evolution of modern educational technology. Ensuring transparency and standards in partner selection to clearly discuss and define procedures, conditions, and technical specifications for choosing experienced and highly skilled international companies to develop the core textbooks. Responding to global labor market demands to ensure that new textbooks will help train Cambodian students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies to compete regionally and globally. Following the presentation on the technical specifications for selecting international companies and subsequent discussions, H.E. Dr. Chan Narun provided several key recommendations to the working group for their continued efforts. These included: Personally visiting schools to gain a detailed understanding of the current curriculum's situation and effectiveness. Engaging in comprehensive discussions with all relevant stakeholders from primary to secondary education, focusing on teaching methodologies, teacher training, and responsiveness to improving PISA test results. He also requested that clear standards for textbooks be set, and that companies provide samples of previously written and published textbooks. Emphasis should be placed on teaching methodologies and teacher training systems, with the integration of teaching methods used in New Generation Schools (NGS). A strategy for the costs of textbook development and printing should be prepared to support the improvement of PISA test results, and teaching methods similar to those in NGS should be incorporated.
