Red Cross International Pledges Continued Support for Border Dispute Refugees in Cambodia
The Cambodian Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have pledged to continue humanitarian assistance for refugees displaced by conflicts along the Cambodia-Thailand border. The President of the Cambodian Red Cross and the ICRC's Regional Delegate for Asia met to discuss past cooperation and future support enhancement.
The Cambodian Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have pledged to continue their humanitarian assistance to refugees affected by conflicts along the Cambodia-Thailand border. This commitment is in response to humanitarian needs. The commitment from both humanitarian organizations was made during a meeting between Samdech Kittipote Bun Rany Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian Red Cross, and Mr. Jürg Montani, ICRC Regional Delegate for Asia, at the Cambodian Red Cross headquarters in Phnom Penh on the morning of July 2, 2026. During the meeting, both parties discussed the cooperation between the ICRC and the Cambodian Red Cross since the ICRC's presence in Cambodia began in 1979. They highlighted the support from the ICRC during armed conflicts along the Cambodia-Thailand border in 2025, and the long-standing collaboration in building capacity for preparedness and response to assist refugees during and after armed conflicts. Notably, on the afternoon of July 1, 2026, prior to the meeting with the President of the Cambodian Red Cross, the ICRC delegation also met with Lieutenant General Ratt Dararath, Secretary of State of the Ministry of National Defense, to discuss Cambodia-Thailand border issues. During that meeting, Lieutenant General Ratt Dararath expressed gratitude to the ICRC for its continued support to Cambodia concerning the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border. Both parties exchanged views on strengthening and expanding cooperation between the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and the ICRC to be more effective. Both sides also reaffirmed the importance of close cooperation, adherence to international humanitarian law, and a joint commitment to respond to humanitarian needs, as well as to contribute to promoting peace, stability, and security in the affected regions.
