USS Abraham Lincoln Arrives in Thailand After 286 Days at Sea

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has docked at the Laem Chabang port in eastern Thailand, concluding a grueling 286-day continuous deployment at sea. The "supercarrier" and its accompanying strike group, which includes the guided-missile destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. and guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls, arrived on Wednesday. This marks a critical port call for the approximately 5,000 service members aboard, their first full opportunity to disembark since their mission began in November 2025. The extended mission, originally slated for a standard six-month tour in the Pacific, was prolonged to support U.S. operations during the war with Iran. This pushed both the ships and their crews to their limits, with reports highlighting severe fatigue and shortages of basic supplies. Local vendors, tailors, and food sellers have prepared for the large crowds, anticipating strong sales as sailors seek leisure and relaxation. The historical relationship between Pattaya and the U.S. military dates back to the Vietnam War, when American troops' rest periods in the area helped transform it from a fishing village into a global tourist destination. Local leaders are excited to welcome a new generation of sailors to their beaches. Thai authorities have implemented robust security measures, deploying approximately 600 officials to ensure public safety and assist the visiting personnel. Police patrols have been intensified in popular beachfront and nightlife areas. Strict warnings have been issued to local businesses against overcharging the service members. Furthermore, clear boundaries have been set for the sailors, who must adhere to both U.S. military regulations and Thai laws. Certain activities, such as parasailing and bungee jumping, have been prohibited for safety reasons, and the use of cannabis, despite its medical legality in Thailand, is also strictly forbidden.
