Philippine Partners Eye Trade, Industrial Cooperation with Can Tho

The Philippines is showing interest in strengthening trade and industrial cooperation with Can Tho City in Vietnam, a move that aligns with broader efforts to deepen bilateral ties and boost regional economic activity. Shirley Nuevo, Acting Consul General of the Philippines in Ho Chi Minh City, highlighted the 50 years of growth the two countries and their peoples have experienced as friends, trusted partners, and close neighbors within the ASEAN family. People-to-people exchanges, including cultural, educational, and youth initiatives, have been crucial in fostering mutual understanding, trust, and affection. Vietnam has proposed studying a higher-level cooperation framework for rice trade. This initiative aims to establish a more stable and long-term foundation for rice trade between Vietnam and the Philippines, ensuring a balance of interests for farmers, businesses, and consumers, and supporting sustainable livelihoods for rice growers and stable living conditions for Philippine consumers. Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc emphasized that the development of the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors should not solely focus on increasing export value. Instead, it must be linked to a comprehensive restructuring of agriculture towards modern, ecological, high-value-added, and sustainable development. These economic cooperation initiatives underscore Vietnam's strategy to diversify its economic partnerships and reduce reliance on any single market, a key aspect of its foreign policy under a one-party system. The focus on sustainable development in agriculture also reflects Vietnam's commitment to environmental goals while enhancing its export capabilities. Furthermore, the report touches upon Vietnam's potential as a market for Argentine businesses due to its robust growth and extensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) network. Vietnam is also seeking to strengthen financial cooperation with Canada to attract long-term capital for economic growth and sustainable development.
