Yangon Mytel Headquarters Undergoing Data Center Construction Amidst Mobile and Internet Line Disruptions in Numerous Townships

While a data center is being constructed at the headquarters of Mytel, a military-owned telecommunications enterprise based in Yangon, mobile phone and internet lines continue to be cut off in numerous townships and revolutionary areas, Ayeyarwaddy Times has learned. Currently, internet access, including mobile phone communication and the use of mobile data, is blocked in areas controlled by revolutionary forces and ethnic armed organizations. "It's been over a year since mobile data became unusable. Phone calls are still possible. When I turn on the internet, only 2G appears, so only what can be opened is available. Nothing can be used. I can use Wi-Fi. I subscribe at home and share it. The line is not good," a resident of Phyu Township told Ayeyarwaddy Times. In Phyu Township, Bago Region, frequent clashes occur between the People's Defence Force (PDF) and the military junta's forces, and the military often burns down villages. Similarly, although the military junta government claims that 5G systems will be usable, mobile phone and internet lines in Yangon city itself are severely slow, according to telecommunications companies in Yangon. "The internet line has been bad since the military coup. Before, if the line dropped a bit, I could call the operator and tell them. Now, even if I report a line outage, I have to wait at least a week for the line to recover," said a female company employee in Yangon. There are also instances where Wi-Fi lines have been cut off due to the clearing of tangled fiber optic cables and communication wires on major roads within Yangon city, preventing new internet cable connections. U Thet Win Aung, the Deputy Minister of Communications for the military junta government, stated that mobile telephone operators and internet service companies need to continue cooperating in the clearing of these cable wires. Currently, the military junta government claims to have allocated and begun implementing the 2600MHz wireless radio frequency required by operators to provide the necessary 5G technology services in line with the times, but mobile phone and internet lines in Myanmar are being comprehensively controlled and monitored. Notably, Mytel is a military-owned operator directly linked to the military's economic benefit organization (MEC), and it is the easiest network for eavesdropping and monitoring users' phone calls, messages, and locations.
