Cambodia Seeks Enhanced Cultural Heritage Cooperation with South Korea, Leveraging Digital Tech and AI

Cambodia has engaged in discussions to strengthen cooperation with South Korea on cultural heritage, particularly focusing on the utilization of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) for the preservation, management, and promotion of cultural assets. On July 22, 2026, Cambodian Ambassador to South Korea, H.E. Khuon Ponreak, and his colleagues attended the 8th ASEAN-ROK Working Committee for Cultural Heritage Cooperation held in Busan, Republic of Korea. The meeting was organized by the Korea Heritage Service (KHS) in collaboration with the ASEAN Culture House (ACH). This initiative operates within the framework of cooperation with the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in Asia and the Pacific (ICHCAP), which is supported by UNESCO. Its objective is to foster mutual cultural understanding and promote sustainable development by enhancing information exchange, sharing experiences, and expanding the cooperation network between the Korea Heritage Service and the ASEAN Committee in Seoul (ACS). The discussions centered on reinforcing cooperation in tangible and intangible cultural heritage between ASEAN and the Republic of Korea. Key agenda items included reviewing past achievements, assessing the current status of joint initiatives and projects, and charting future directions for enhanced collaboration. Ambassador Khuon Ponreak highlighted that the meeting served as a significant platform for Cambodia to share its experiences, bolster the capacities of its relevant institutions, and explore new cooperation opportunities. He specifically emphasized the potential of leveraging digital technologies and AI to improve the efficiency of preserving, managing, and disseminating Cambodia's cultural heritage, and to apply these advancements to the protection, preservation, and management of ASEAN-ROK cultural heritage.
