Hun Sen Praises Japan's Role in Cambodia's Peace and Mine Clearance

Phnom Penh, July 14, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Tuesday lauded Japan’s significant contributions to Cambodia’s peace-building, mine clearance, and infrastructure development during a farewell meeting with the outgoing Japanese Ambassador UENO Atsushi. Samdech Techo expressed gratitude for Japan's assistance in overcoming challenges following decades of conflict, particularly noting its support for demining operations and reconstruction. "Japan has played an important role in Cambodia’s development, including through major infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges and ports," Senate spokesperson Chea Thyrith quoted Samdech Techo Hun Sen as saying. The Senate President highlighted that bilateral ties have advanced to a strategic partnership, with cooperation expanding in security, trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. He also appreciated Ambassador UENO’s efforts to strengthen relations and expressed hope that the ambassador would continue to remember his work in Cambodia. Ambassador UENO, who first visited Cambodia in 1991, spoke of his connection to the country extending beyond his ambassadorial role, recalling witnessing Cambodia’s transformation and development progress over more than three decades. Japan remains one of Cambodia’s key development partners, providing assistance in peace-building, demining, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and human resource development. Samdech Techo concluded the meeting by wishing UENO success and prosperity after completing his posting.
