Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman to Visit Laos

Mr. Tran Thanh Man, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Chairman of the National Assembly, will visit Vientiane, the capital of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, on August 9th. Chairman Man is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on Mr. Saysomphone Phomvihane, a member of the Politburo of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and Chairman of the National Assembly. This visit is understood to aim at further strengthening the relations between Vietnam and Laos at both party and state levels. Vietnam, while maintaining its one-party system, prioritizes economic growth. Particularly, as relations with China become more complex, especially concerning the South China Sea issue, strengthening cooperation with Southeast Asian countries, including Laos, holds a significant position in Vietnam's foreign policy strategy. For many years, Vietnam and Laos have built a close friendly relationship, described as "special relations." This relationship is rooted not only in their shared border but also in their historical background, particularly their cooperation during the Vietnam War. In economic terms, foreign direct investment (FDI) from Vietnam has contributed to Laos's infrastructure development and natural resource exploitation, although domestic economic disparities and environmental issues in Laos have also been pointed out. Chairman Man's visit is expected to serve as an opportunity to reaffirm political trust between the two countries and explore new frameworks for economic cooperation. In particular, strengthening cooperation within ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), where regional economic integration is progressing, will be of common interest to both nations. Vietnam is believed to intend to further deepen its relations with Laos to reduce its economic dependence on China while maintaining and expanding its regional influence.
