Cambodia Reiterates Commitment to Peaceful Resolution of Thai Border Dispute

PHNOM PENH, Aug 6, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia remains committed to resolving its border dispute with Thailand peacefully and in line with international law, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn told Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, officials said Wednesday. During talks in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed Cambodia’s position that the issue should be settled under existing bilateral treaties and agreements, according to the foreign ministry. He thanked Malaysia for supporting efforts towards a peaceful resolution and congratulated the country on its successful ASEAN chairmanship in 2025. The meeting took place during Prak Sokhonn’s official visit, where he co‑chaired the third Cambodia‑Malaysia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation with Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan. The visit concluded with the signing of agreed minutes, with both sides set to hold the next JCBC meeting in Cambodia in 2028. Government spokesman Pen Bona said visits by ASEAN observers, ambassadors, international organisations, journalists and influencers had enabled the world to witness what Cambodia describes as violations of its sovereignty. The interior ministry reported 20,281 displaced people as of Aug 2, including more than 10,000 women and 6,000 children. It said over 640,000 fled during fighting, with most now back in their communities. According to Ministry of Interior schools and health facilities remain closed in several provinces, including six schools and four hospitals in Oddar Meanchey, five schools and one health centre in Banteay Meanchey, and four schools and two health centres in Preah Vihear.
