Giant Monitor Lizard Rescued After Getting Stuck in New Canal on Ngamwongwan Road

A large monitor lizard was rescued in Bangkok after its tail became trapped in rebar within a newly dug canal on Ngamwongwan Road, near the Provincial Electricity Authority in Chatuchak District. Residents reported the animal's predicament. Volunteer rescuers from 'Asa Ruam Duay' were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the monitor lizard, a substantial size, with its tail caught in the metal bars of the newly constructed canal wall. The animal was distressed and unable to free itself. Equipped with large bolt cutters, the volunteers entered the canal to carefully cut through the rebar. After approximately thirty minutes of work, they successfully removed the metal, enabling the rescue of the monitor lizard. The animal was subsequently relocated to a safe area. This incident highlights unexpected encounters with wildlife in urbanizing Bangkok and raises questions about the environmental impact of infrastructure development. Further observation will be crucial to understand how newly created canals affect local wildlife habitats.
