Suspended Dawei Special Economic Zone to be Resumed

The Dawei Special Economic Zone project, located in Yephyu Township and Nabulel region of Dawei District, Tanintharyi Region, has been suspended but is currently being planned for resumption, according to Deputy Minister of Commerce U Win Myint Khine. This was in response to a starred question from U Maung Sein, a Member of Parliament for Tanintharyi Region Constituency No. 3, during the 12th day of the 2nd regular session of the 3rd Pyidaungsu Hluttaw held on July 3, asking whether there are plans to continue implementing the suspended Dawei deep-sea port project. Deputy Minister of Commerce U Win Myint Khine stated that the investment cooperation agreement within the Dawei Economic Zone has been signed by both Myanmar and Russia, and the suspended Dawei Special Economic Zone project is now being resumed. He also mentioned that the Dawei Special Economic Zone Management Committee is working on implementing the project in three phases as previously planned to restart the project. The Dawei deep-sea port project was initiated in 2008 with the signing of an agreement by the foreign ministers of Myanmar and Thailand. According to the response from Deputy Minister of Commerce U Win Myint Khine, the project was suspended in 2013 due to the inability to fully implement it because of its large scale.
