Vietnam's SJC Gold Price Plummets Amid US Monetary Policy Outlook
Vietnam's domestic SJC gold bar price dropped by VND 1.5 million per tael to VND 145 million, hitting a one-week low, following a surge in US interest rate hike expectations after the release of US inflation data.
Vietnam's domestic gold prices experienced a significant drop on September 11th, mirroring global market trends and influenced by the outlook for the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy. The retail price of SJC gold bars, a widely traded commodity in Vietnam, fell by up to VND 1.5 million per tael, reaching VND 145 million per tael. This marks the lowest price observed in the past week. The buying price also saw a corresponding decrease to VND 142 million per tael. Similarly, the retail price of 9999 pure gold rings declined by VND 1.6 million per tael to VND 144.5 million, with the buying price at VND 141.5 million per tael. Internationally, the US August Producer Price Index (PPI) showed a stronger-than-expected increase, bolstering expectations that the Federal Reserve might implement further interest rate hikes at its upcoming policy meeting, with market probabilities rising to 70%. Consequently, the US Dollar Index rose by approximately 0.3%, and US Treasury yields also increased. These factors collectively pushed global gold prices down to $4,304 per ounce, a substantial drop of about $400, representing a 12.6% decrease from its recent peak. When converted to Vietnamese Dong, the global gold price equates to VND 135.5 million per tael, creating a price disparity with the domestic market. The precious metals market also saw a sharp decline in silver prices. However, reports indicate that some jewelry stores are experiencing stock shortages for silver products. Under Vietnam's one-party system, financial market stability is crucial for economic growth, and fluctuations in gold prices can impact citizens' asset management and consumption patterns. Gold's role as an inflation hedge is significant, making these price movements a point of considerable public interest. Source: The Saigon Times
