Ratanakiri Releases 40,000 Fry on National Fish Day to Boost Resources and Tourism

Approximately 40,000 mixed fry were released into Boeung Kansaing in Banlung city, Ratanakiri province, as part of the celebration of "National Fish Day." This initiative aims to increase fishery resources, conserve biodiversity, and enhance the potential of natural tourism. The event was organized on the morning of July 22, 2026, by the Ratanakiri Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. It was presided over by Mr. Nhab Bunheng, Chairman of the Provincial Council, and Mr. Nham Samoeun, the Provincial Governor, along with leaders from relevant departments, civil servants, and many students. Mr. Nghet Thara, Deputy Director of the Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, stated that the purpose of organizing National Fish Day (July 1) is to raise public awareness and encourage participation in the protection, conservation, and development of fishery resources to ensure sustainability for economic, social, and environmental benefits. He further explained that approximately 40,000 fry and several important broodstock species, such as Chettin, Krang, Kandor, and Andeang, were released into Boeung Kansaing to increase the biodiversity in this natural lake located in the center of the city. This aims to make it a source of fishery resources that can attract tourists and contribute to supplying natural food for the local population. Concurrently, Mr. Nham Samoeun, the Governor of Ratanakiri province, stated that fish and other aquatic animals remain a crucial source of protein for Cambodian citizens, second only to rice. To meet the growing market demand, the government continues to prioritize the development of the fisheries sector by strengthening the conservation of fishery resources, promoting commercial aquaculture, and encouraging investment in fish farming, broodstock production, and the processing of fishery products to ensure quality and market competitiveness. He also called on civil servants and citizens to continue participating effectively and sustainably in the management, protection, and conservation of fishery resources. This involves linking business activities with the conservation of natural resources to preserve them as a legacy for future generations. According to the Ratanakiri Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, the province currently has 15 fishing communities covering nearly 7,000 hectares, with a total of 3,631 members, including 1,486 women. In addition, 34 broodstock conservation ponds covering approximately 325 hectares have been designated and registered. Educational outreach on fishery laws and the suppression of fishery offenses are also being continuously implemented.
