Cambodian Education Minister Seeks Japanese Educational Expertise in Nagoya Meeting

Cambodian Minister of Education, Hang Chuon Naron, met with Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa on the afternoon of September 18, 2026, requesting the introduction of Japanese expertise in the education sector. The Cambodian government is currently undertaking comprehensive reforms in this field. During the meeting, Minister Naron elaborated on Cambodia's extensive educational reforms, emphasizing a focus on enhancing learning outcomes, school leadership, foundational education, STEM education, digital education, and competency-based education to prepare for the 21st century. He specifically expressed interest in learning from Japan's successful experiences in improving school quality, developing teachers' professional skills, integrating technology and innovation, and fostering community participation in school development. Both parties welcomed opportunities to further strengthen cooperation through exchange programs involving schools, teachers, students, and educational leaders, as well as capacity building in school management and youth cultural exchanges. These initiatives are expected to bolster friendly relations between the two countries. Minister Naron underscored the indispensable role of international cooperation, particularly with Japan, in investing in human capital, which is the utmost priority for the Cambodian government. This meeting has opened new avenues for cooperation that will yield long-term benefits for educators, students, and communities in both Cambodia and Nagoya. Notably, the meeting took place during Minister Naron's visit to Japan, where he is leading the Cambodian sports delegation to the 20th Asian Games 2026 held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. In the realm of sports as well, Minister Naron expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and people, whom he considers a reliable partner consistently supporting Cambodia's development, including in education and human capital development.
