Cambodia Secures $115 Million from World Bank for Sustainable Energy Transition

Cambodia is set to receive a total of $115 million in concessional loans and grants from the World Bank to advance its Sustainable Energy Transition Project (CSET). This funding will be allocated to enhance electricity supply capacity, promote the adoption of renewable energy, and develop smart grid infrastructure. On July 22, 2026, the Electricité du Cambodge (EDC), in collaboration with the World Bank, organized a workshop on Early Market Engagement (EME). The workshop aimed to provide information to stakeholders regarding the marketability and participation possibilities of projects such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), transmission grids, and substations. The workshop was attended by key figures including Dr. Prang Cholsa, Director General of EDC, along with representatives from the World Bank, construction companies, and equipment suppliers. The project includes $110 million in concessional loans and $5 million in grants from the World Bank. Key components of the project include the construction of transmission lines and substations, the implementation of BESS, the expansion and strengthening of the distribution network, the development of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, and the deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). These initiatives are expected to contribute to stabilizing and improving the quality of electricity supply, thereby increasing electricity access, particularly in rural areas. The development of EV infrastructure will support the transportation sector by reducing fuel consumption. Furthermore, the implementation of AMI will lead to the realization of a smart grid, resulting in reduced operational costs and improved energy utilization efficiency for customers.
