Local Cooperation a Distinctive Feature of Vietnam-Japan Relations: PM

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung emphasized that local-level cooperation is an "important and distinctive feature" of Vietnam-Japan relations. He revealed that the Vietnamese government views this local collaboration as a "practical and effective channel" that contributes to the overall development of bilateral ties. This statement reflects the current reality where economic and political ties between Vietnam and Japan are deepening, not only between central governments but also at local government and private sector levels. Under Vietnam's one-party system, local government activities play an indispensable role in achieving the central government's policy objectives. Especially in economic growth, local infrastructure development and investment attraction form the foundation supporting national development. Japan is a major investor in Vietnam, having made substantial investments for many years, primarily in the manufacturing sector. In recent years, with Vietnam's economic growth and the expansion of its middle class, interest in consumer goods and services sectors has also increased. Strengthening local cooperation has the potential to spread these investment flows to a wider range of regions, contributing to the overall improvement of the Vietnamese economy. Furthermore, Vietnam-Japan relations extend beyond the economic sphere to science and technology, human resource training, and even political and ideological fields. The diversity of relations is suggested by discussions between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Japanese Communist Party, even on the vitality of communism in the digital era. The Prime Minister's remarks suggest that Vietnam positions its relationship with Japan as comprehensive and strategic, going beyond a mere economic partnership. Emphasizing local cooperation can be seen as a reaffirmation of the importance of collaboration with Japan in Vietnam's efforts to correct regional disparities and pursue sustainable development.
