Thailand to Link Laem Chabang and Chanthaburi with Multimodal Transport to Cut Logistics Costs

Thailand's Ministry of Transport is moving forward with plans to establish a multimodal transport network connecting the major port of Laem Chabang with Chanthaburi Province, a region known for its agriculture and industry. This initiative is part of strengthening the logistics hub within the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) and aims to support sustainable economic growth while reducing domestic logistics costs. The multimodal transport network is designed to facilitate efficient cargo movement by integrating various transportation modes, including maritime, land (road and rail), and potentially inland waterway transport. Enhancing transport capacity connecting Laem Chabang Port, Thailand's largest container port and a crucial international trade gateway, with the inland areas is considered an urgent priority. Chanthaburi Province is a key production area for agricultural products such as fruits and rubber, as well as industrial goods like electronics. Infrastructure development to efficiently transport these products domestically and internationally has been in demand. The planned network is expected to enable timely and cost-effective transportation from producers to consumers or exporters. The Ministry of Transport is accelerating efforts to concretize the plan, including inviting media representatives for site inspections at Laem Chabang Port and Chanthaburi Province. Detailed route planning, necessary infrastructure investments, and coordination with relevant agencies are expected to be formulated in the upcoming implementation plan. This endeavor is also positioned as part of the Thai government's "Thailand 4.0" strategy, potentially leading to the realization of smart logistics utilizing digital technologies.
