MANILA, Philippines — Generally fair weather with localized rain showers are expected to prevail over major parts of the country from Friday until this weekend, the state weather bureau said. Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather specialist Obet Badrina said during the 5 a.m. weather advisory on Friday, July 17, that fair weather conditions may persist until Sunday, although parts of Luzon are likely to experience localized thunderstorms on Friday afternoon. Much of Luzon will experience localized rain showers and thunderstorms, while the weather will be hot and humid around midday,” Badrina reported. He added that the southwest monsoon, or habagat, is only affecting Extreme Northern Luzon. “What is affecting our country more is the habagat or the southwest monsoon, especially in Extreme Northern Luzon,” Badrina shared. The southwest monsoon is forecast to bring gloomy skies and occasional rains over Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands on Friday. Meanwhile, by Sunday, it is also likely to bring scattered rain over Ilocos Region, Bataan, and Zambales. “It is possible that the southwest monsoon, originating from Extreme Northern Luzon, will affect other parts of Luzon. From Monday to Tuesday, the monsoon’s influence will persist, particularly over the western sections of Central and Southern Luzon and parts of Western Visayas,” Badrina said. Meanwhile, the tropical depression (TD) being monitored outside the country has a low chance of entering the Philippine area of responsibility and is expected to further weaken into a low pressure area in the coming days. “Based on the latest data, there is a low probability of it (TD) entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Our data also indicates that it (TD) will dissipate and become a low-pressure area in the coming days,” Badrina reported. According to Pagasa, as of 3 a.m., the TD is located 2,965 kilometers east of Southeastern Mindanao, moving northwestward slowly.
